How to apply for the £4,500 extra financial support (Step by step guide)

Thousands of pensioners across the UK could be missing out on extra financial support worth more than £4,500 a year on average.

The money comes from Pension Credit, a benefit provided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to help older people living on a low income.

The good news is that you do not need to wait for a letter from the DWP before applying. If you have reached State Pension age and meet the eligibility rules, you can check whether you qualify and submit an application.

Here is a simple guide explaining how to claim, what information you need and where to get help.

Step 1: Check If You Are Eligible

Before applying, check whether you meet the Pension Credit requirements.

You may qualify if:

  • You have reached State Pension age.
  • You live in England, Scotland or Wales.
  • You have a low income.
  • You meet the relevant rules if you live with a partner.

For the 2026/27 financial year, Pension Credit can top up your weekly income to:

  • £238 per week if you are single.
  • £363.25 per week if you have a partner, based on your combined income.

You could still qualify if your income is higher, particularly if you have a disability, caring responsibilities or certain housing costs.

You can check your eligibility using the official government website:

https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility

Step 2: Gather the Documents and Information You Need

Before starting your application, make sure you have the necessary information.

You will normally need:

  1. Your National Insurance number.
  2. Your date of birth.
  3. Details of your State Pension and any other income.
  4. Information about your savings and investments.
  5. Your bank or building society account details.
  6. Details of your partner’s income and savings, if applicable.
  7. Information about certain housing costs, if relevant.

If you want to backdate your claim, you may also need to provide information about your finances during the earlier period.

Having these details ready can make the application process easier.

Step 3: Apply Online Through GOV.UK

One of the easiest ways to apply for Pension Credit is through the official government website.

Follow these steps:

  1. Visit https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/how-to-claim.
  2. Scroll down to the section labelled Apply online.
  3. Click the application link.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. Enter your personal information.
  6. Provide details of your income, savings and any partner.
  7. Enter your bank account information when requested.
  8. Review your answers carefully and submit your application.

The online service is available if you have already applied for your State Pension and meet the online application conditions.

If you cannot apply online, there are other ways to make a claim.

Step 4: Apply by Phone If You Cannot Use the Internet

Pensioners who are uncomfortable using computers or smartphones can apply by telephone.

Call the official Pension Credit claim line:

0800 99 1234

Opening hours:

Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, except public holidays.

When you call, explain that you want to apply for Pension Credit.

An adviser can guide you through the application and ask for the information needed to process your claim.

You can also ask a trusted friend or family member to help you with the phone call.

Step 5: Apply by Post If You Prefer Paper Forms

If you would rather complete a paper application, you can request a Pension Credit claim form.

You can get the form through the official GOV.UK website or by calling the Pension Credit claim line.

Once you have completed the form, send it to:

Freepost DWP Pensions Service 3

You do not need to add a postcode or pay for a stamp.

Make sure all the required sections are completed before posting your application.

Step 6: Ask for Your Pension Credit to Be Backdated

One important thing many pensioners may not know is that Pension Credit can sometimes be backdated.

If you were eligible before applying, you may be able to receive payments covering up to three previous months.

For example, if you qualify for £80 a week and were eligible throughout the previous three months, you could potentially receive around £1,040 in backdated payments.

The exact amount depends on your circumstances and how long you were eligible.

When applying, make sure you ask for your claim to be backdated if you believe you qualified earlier.

You can also start your application up to four months before reaching State Pension age.

Step 7: Wait for the DWP to Review Your Application

After submitting your application, the Pension Service will review the information you have provided.

The department may contact you if it needs additional details.

Once a decision has been made, you will be told whether your application has been successful and how much Pension Credit you are entitled to receive.

If your claim is approved, payments will normally be made into your nominated bank or building society account.

If your application is refused and you believe the decision is wrong, you can ask the DWP to review it through a process called mandatory reconsideration.

Step 8: Check for Other Benefits You Could Receive

Once you have been awarded Pension Credit, it is worth checking whether you qualify for other financial support.

Depending on your circumstances, this could include:

  • A free TV licence if you are aged 75 or over.
  • Help with Council Tax.
  • Housing Benefit if you rent your home.
  • Help with certain NHS costs.
  • Support with heating bills.
  • Other assistance available to low-income pensioners.

Some benefits require a separate application, so do not assume they will all be paid automatically.

Can Someone Apply on Behalf of an Older Relative?

Yes. Family members and trusted friends can help pensioners complete their applications.

For example, if your parents or grandparents have difficulty using the internet, you can help them check their eligibility, gather their information and complete the application.

You can also contact organisations such as Citizens Advice or Age UK for guidance.

Important: You Do Not Have to Wait for a DWP Letter

Although the government is distributing 660,000 Pension Credit information leaflets across selected UK areas, you do not need to receive one before applying.

If you have reached State Pension age and believe you may qualify, you can check your eligibility now.

Remember, the £4,500 figure is the average annual value of Pension Credit highlighted by the DWP. It is not a one-off cash payment or a guaranteed amount for everyone.

Apply through the official government website:

https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/how-to-claim

Or call the Pension Credit claim line: 0800 99 1234.
