Three Churches, One Building
Image idea: priests or monks inside the church.
No single church owns the Holy Sepulchre. The Greek Orthodox, the Roman Catholics (through the Franciscans) and the Armenian Apostolic Church share control of it. Smaller groups also have chapels inside.
Since the 1700s, strict rules known as the Status Quo have set who controls each corner and who can repair what. Even small jobs need all sides to agree, so big repairs were put off for a very long time.
This system keeps the peace, but it can also slow things down. Over the years, there have been arguments, and even scuffles, over things as small as moving a chair or cleaning a step.
