Who Paid for It
Image idea: the restored shrine glowing with candles.
The work cost about $3.7 million. The three churches each gave money, and the World Monuments Fund, a charity based in the US, gave a large share thanks to a private donation.
King Abdullah II of Jordan also gave a personal gift towards the work. It was a rare example of many groups paying for one shared project.
Even with the money in place, there was no room for mistakes. The shrine is one of the most watched buildings on Earth, and the whole world would see the result.
