Destroyed in 1009
Image idea: old ruins or a medieval illustration of Jerusalem.
In 1009, the Fatimid ruler al-Hakim ordered the church to be destroyed. His men knocked down the building and hacked away much of the rock tomb itself.
The church was rebuilt, on a smaller scale, by around 1048. A new shrine was put up over what was left of the burial place.
This attack is one of the reasons so little of the first tomb is visible today. It also explains why experts were never sure how much of the original rock was left under all the later stone and marble.
