Martin Lewis has warned that millions of households may be missing out on huge savings on their water bills, calling it the UK’s “forgotten utility” and says some people have saved up to £1,000 a year by making one simple change.
Speaking on ITV’s Martin Lewis Money Show Live, the consumer champion encouraged viewers to review how their water charges are calculated, saying many people are paying far more than they need to.
The “Forgotten Utility” That Could Slash Bills
Martin Lewis said households often focus on cutting:
- gas bills
- electricity bills
- broadband or insurance costs
…but forget to review their water charges.
He told viewers that big savings are possible for:
- single-person households
- low-income families
- people on benefits
- larger homes with fewer occupants
One viewer shared how switching to a water meter transformed her bill.
Real-Life Example: From £42 a Month to £11.50
A woman explained she lived alone in a three-bedroom house and was being charged based on estimated usage, not what she actually used.
Her bill was:
- £42 per month before
- £11.50 per month after switching to a meter
Saving her over £30 every month or more than £360 a year.
Martin Lewis said this was not rare — and in some cases:
“I’ve seen people save over £1,000 a year by switching to a water meter.”
Why a Water Meter Can Save So Much
Water companies estimate bills using property size and rateable value, not real consumption.
A meter is usually better if:
- more bedrooms than people in the home
- single person or couple in a family-sized property
- older children have moved out
- low water usage lifestyle
Households can also request trial meter installations, and in many regions:
- you can switch back within 12 months if it doesn’t save money
5.7 Million Homes Missing Out on Discounted Tariffs
Martin Lewis said millions of people may qualify for social water tariffs but are not claiming them.
These discounts help:
- people on low incomes (around £21,000 or less)
- households receiving certain benefits
Some customers can see bills reduced or capped.
Extra Help for People With Medical Conditions or Large Families
Martin highlighted the WaterSure scheme, which can cap bills for:
- households with three or more children
- people with medical conditions requiring high water use
(such as Crohn’s disease, kidney conditions, or skin disorders)
One viewer named Louise shared that she:
- has Crohn’s disease
- lives on a low income
- cares for two teenage girls
After applying for support:
- her bill dropped from £40 per month to £29 per month
