DVLA Ask All Drivers To Update These 4 Documents to Avoid Problems

Finance By LordSparoJune 24, 2026

Millions of motorists in the UK are being reminded to update important records after changing their home address, or they could face problems receiving important information about their vehicles.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a warning that updating your driving licence alone is not enough when you move house. Drivers must also make sure several other documents are updated to avoid missing official notices, fines, or tax reminders.

With millions of people moving home every year, the DVLA says many motorists forget to update all the necessary records linked to their vehicle and driving details.

4 Documents Drivers Must Update After Moving Home

According to the DVLA, there are four key documents that should be updated if you change your address.

1. Driving Licence

Drivers must update the address on their full or provisional driving licence when they move home.

The DVLA allows motorists to update their address online, and the process is usually quick and free. Drivers can continue using their existing licence while waiting for the updated one to arrive.

However, if the move is only temporary, for example, students living away at university, the DVLA says you do not need to update your licence as long as you can still be contacted at your permanent address.

2. Vehicle Log Book (V5C)

If you are the registered keeper of a vehicle, you must also update the address on your V5C log book.

This document shows who is responsible for the vehicle and is used for things like vehicle tax and ownership records.

Failing to update the address on the V5C could mean important letters, including:

  • vehicle tax reminders
  • parking fines
  • official notices

are sent to the wrong address.

3. Vehicle Tax Direct Debit

Drivers who pay their vehicle tax using Direct Debit must also notify the DVLA if they move home.

Unlike other updates that can be done online, motorists usually need to contact the DVLA by phone to change the address connected to a Direct Debit payment.

Keeping these details up to date helps ensure vehicle tax payments continue without disruption.

4. Private Number Plate or Trailer Documents

Motorists who own private registration numbers that are not currently assigned to a vehicle must also update their documents.

These include:

  • V750 certificate of entitlement
  • V778 retention document

Drivers who own trailers and plan to take them abroad must also ensure their trailer registration certificate shows their correct address.

Why updating your details matters

If your address is out of date, you may miss important communications from the DVLA.

This could lead to:

  • missed tax reminders
  • penalty notices
  • delays with vehicle administration
  • potential fines

Because of this, the DVLA strongly advises drivers to review their records whenever they move to a new home.
