Yes, international students can get scholarships at Yale, and for many families the support is very large. At Yale College (the undergraduate school), your family’s money does not affect whether you get in, and if you are admitted, Yale pays 100% of what your family cannot afford. At the graduate level, every PhD student is fully funded, and several professional schools offer big tuition awards.
This guide explains, in plain English, how Yale scholarships work for international students in 2026-27, how much they can cover, which programs offer funding, and exactly how to apply.
Quick facts
- Yale College is need-blind for every applicant in the world, including international students.
- Yale meets 100% of demonstrated financial need, with no loans required.
- Families with income below $100,000 and typical assets pay $0 for tuition, housing, food and travel.
- Families with income below $200,000 and typical assets get at least free tuition.
- Yale College does not offer merit or sports scholarships. All undergraduate aid is based on need.
- All Yale PhD students get full tuition plus a yearly stipend of at least $52,046 (2026-27).
How Yale Scholarships Work for International Undergraduates
Yale College uses two simple rules: need-blind admission and need-based aid. Together, they make Yale one of the very few US universities where an international student from a low-income family can study almost for free.
1. Need-blind admission
Need-blind means the admissions team does not look at your ability to pay when they decide. Yale says this applies to every student, anywhere in the world, whatever their citizenship or immigration status. So asking for financial aid will not hurt your chances.
2. Need-based aid that covers 100% of need
If you are admitted, Yale works out how much your family can reasonably pay. Yale then covers the rest with a Yale Scholarship, which is a grant. You never pay it back.
- Yale does not put loans in your first aid offer.
- 88% of Yale College graduates finish with no student loan debt.
- The average yearly need-based scholarship is $75,220.
- 21% of students have families who pay nothing at all.
3. The 2026-27 income levels
Starting with students who enter in 2026-27, Yale made its aid more generous:
| Family income (typical assets) | What Yale covers |
| Below $100,000 | Everything: tuition, housing, food, travel, health insurance, plus a $2,000 start-up grant in year one |
| $100,000 to $200,000 | At least the full cost of tuition |
| Above $200,000 | Aid still possible, based on your family’s real need |
Yale also publishes what a typical family pays. At $150,000 income, a typical family pays about $10,000 a year. At $250,000, it is about $43,000.
Important for international families: these income levels are written in US dollars. For international students, Yale adjusts its needs analysis for the difference between the US economy and your home country’s economy. That means your result could be higher or lower than the table above. The best way to check is Yale’s free cost estimator (link in Sources).
4. Extra support beyond the main award
Yale also gives extra grants for winter clothing, summer study abroad and unexpected money problems. Students on aid can get an International Study Award to help pay for an approved summer abroad. International students who are already enrolled at Yale College do not need to send a new aid application after their first year.
How Much Does Yale Cost in 2026-27?
Before aid, one year at Yale College costs about $97,985, plus travel. Here is Yale’s official estimate:
| Cost item | 2026-27 (USD) |
| Tuition | $72,500 |
| Housing | $12,080 |
| Food | $9,520 |
| Personal expenses | $2,700 |
| Books and supplies | $1,000 |
| Student activity fee | $185 |
| Total (before travel) | $97,985 |
Travel costs are added on top, based on where you live. The billed part (tuition, fee, housing and food) comes to $94,285.
Do not let this number scare you. Families on aid never pay the full price. Yale takes the total cost, subtracts what your family can afford, and fills the gap with a scholarship. If costs go up in later years, Yale raises your aid to match.
A note on US taxes: for international students, part of a scholarship can count as taxable income in the US. Yale has a separate page explaining this, and you should read it before you arrive.
Yale Scholarships for International Graduate Students
Each Yale graduate and professional school has its own funding rules. PhD funding is the most generous, while master’s and professional degrees vary a lot. Here is a simple overview.
| Program | Funding for international students (2026-27) |
| PhD (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) | Full tuition ($52,400) plus a 12-month stipend of at least $52,046 and health cover, for every PhD student |
| MPP, Jackson School of Global Affairs | 100% of tuition covered for every MPP student; average award $81K for the Class of 2027 |
| MBA, Yale School of Management | Dean’s Scholarships and named awards, given after admission; separate scholarship form needed |
| JD, Yale Law School | Need-based grants plus a loan; meets 100% of demonstrated need |
| Most master’s programs (GSAS) | Usually little or no funding; check with your department |
PhD programs: fully funded for everyone
Every Yale PhD student gets a fellowship that covers full tuition, a living stipend and paid health coverage. This is the same for US and international students. You do not fill in a separate scholarship form. You are considered when you apply for the PhD.
Some programs pay more. For example, the biomedical sciences (BBS) stipend is $53,629 in 2026-27, for students of any citizenship. Top science applicants may also be named Gruber Science Fellows, which adds a stipend top-up and a research account. Non-US citizens can be chosen.
Jackson School of Global Affairs (MPP)
Yale Jackson says it covers 100% of tuition for every MPP student. Students can also get a stipend for living costs. Some fellowships focus on regions such as Africa or East Asia, and most need no extra form. Jackson also gives first-year students up to $6,000 for summer projects. International students can apply for private loans through Elm Select.
Yale School of Management (MBA)
Yale SOM gives scholarships after you are admitted, through a short extra application. If you skip it, you are not considered for grant aid. Awards with an international focus include:
- Global Leaders from India MBA Scholarship: up to five awards a year, each covering at least half of tuition. No separate form.
- Yale Africa Impact Scholarship: at least two awards a year, covering at least half of tuition, for students from Africa who plan to return and work there.
- Yale-FUNED Scholarship: extra funding for admitted students from Mexico.
- Aspire Fellowship: for students who have overcome money hardship, from $60,000 up to full tuition and fees.
Yale Law School (JD)
Yale Law gives aid based only on need, not grades. International students get the same need-based aid as US students: a mix of grants and a loan. Non-citizens can use the Yale Graduate and Professional International (YGPI) Loan, which needs no US co-signer. For 2026-27, 89 students with the highest need received the Hurst Horizon Scholarship, which covers full tuition, fees and health cover.
Yale World Fellows: a funded program for leaders
The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program is not a degree. It is a four-month program at Yale (mid-August to mid-December) for leaders who are 5 to 25 years into their careers. Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the US and fluent in English.
Fellows pay no tuition. They get a living stipend, a furnished apartment, medical insurance and a round-trip flight from home. The application fee is $20, and applications for the 2027 program close on 2 December 2026.
Outside Scholarships You Can Use at Yale
You can also bring money from outside Yale. This matters most for master’s students, since many master’s programs give little funding.
- Fulbright Foreign Student Program: run in your home country by the US embassy or Fulbright commission. It often funds master’s and PhD study in the US. Yale Jackson names Fulbright as a common source for its students.
- Home government scholarships: many countries pay for top students to study abroad. Check your ministry of education.
- Foundation awards: for example, FUNED supports Mexican students at Yale SOM, and the Kwok Scholarship has supported a Jackson MPP student.
How outside awards affect Yale College aid: if you win an outside scholarship as an undergraduate, Yale first uses it to lower your own student share. Only money beyond that reduces your Yale Scholarship. So an outside award still helps you.
How to Apply for Yale Financial Aid (Step by Step)
For Yale College, there is no separate scholarship form with a special name. You apply for admission and financial aid at the same time.
- Apply for admission. Use the Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge. Tick the box that says you want financial aid.
- Check your applicant portal. Yale creates a personal financial aid checklist for you. New documents can be added later, so check it often.
- Complete the CSS Profile. Yale’s code is 3987. Yale’s checklist for international citizens lists it, and fee waivers exist for eligible students.
- Send income documents. Upload parent and student income papers, such as tax returns or an employer letter, through the College Board’s IDOC service. Yale prefers IDOC, and it accepts international tax returns.
- Wait for your offer. If admitted, you get your aid offer with your admission decision, as long as you sent everything on time.
Do not use the ISFAA form as a replacement. Yale does not accept it in place of its own required forms.
Key deadlines for Fall 2027 entry
| Step | Deadline |
| Early Action admission | 1 November 2026 |
| Early Action financial aid (international citizens) | 1 December 2026 |
| Regular Decision admission | 2 January 2027 |
| Regular Decision financial aid | 15 February 2027 |
| Transfer financial aid | 1 April 2027 |
For PhD programs, funding comes with your offer, and deadlines are set by each program (often December or early January). For the MBA, the scholarship form comes after you are admitted.
Tips to Give Yourself the Best Chance
- Apply even if you have no money. Yale is need-blind, so your finances do not count against you.
- Use the cost estimator first. Yale’s Instant Net Price Estimator and MyinTuition tool give a quick, personal estimate in minutes.
- Start your documents early. Income papers from your home country may need time to collect, certify or translate.
- Be honest and complete. Explain anything unusual, such as a family business, farm income or a parent who lives apart.
- Meet every deadline. Late papers can delay your offer, which leaves you less time to decide.
- Focus on a strong application. Since aid follows admission, your essays, grades and activities matter most. Yale looks for strong academics plus real impact in your community.
- For graduate study, look outside Yale too. Pair a Yale award with Fulbright or a home government scholarship to cover living costs.
